An Appreciation: The Chappelle Show

Black Bush......damn, I miss this guy

Black Bush......damn, I miss this guy

Do I really need to list the characters?  Black Bush?  Ashy Larry?  Tyrone Biggums?  Negrodamus?  Rick James?  Do I need to list the skits?  The World Series of Dice?  Black Reparations?  The Making The Band spoof?  For that matter, The Real World spoof?  Prince kicking ass in basketball?  I could go on and on, but you all know, you probably have the DVD’s like I do.  Dave Chappelle’s genius was on display every minute that show was aired.  He was (and still is)  the next step on the evolutionary scale of Black American comedic talent……Redd Foxx, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock…….then Dave. His humor resonated with audiences, providing us with laughs at our most vulnerable moments and weaknesses and finding a way to create humor where there was none before.  His comedy challenged us to find more similarities than differences amongst each other and forced us all to look at the deepest, least accessible places within ourselves and find something funny and telling.  There are any number of stories concerning what, supposedly, was the real reason behind his subsequent leaving his show during the height of its success……maybe when your skill set is that high, there is nowhere to go but down, and in the midst of your fall, it dawns on you that what you already know is enough and it will be okay, screw the money…..I’m not smart enough to contemplate that….instead, I’ll keep my DVD’s popping and enjoy the genius that was the Chappelle Show……HBO and the rest of cable television should be ashamed that they haven’t put this guy on…..make that deal, stop bullshitting.

  1. Word…Chappelle and HBO, perfect match!!

  2. Real exercise, good exercise, takes place in, if not the wild, than in some urban approximation thereof. ,
