Manny, in a Beatdown

The calm before the storm.....Hatton should have left right then

Let me begin with one undisputed fact:  Manny Pacquiao is the best pound for pound boxer in the world after last night, bar none. His two round destruction of Ricky Hatton in last night’s bout, live from about 2o minutes away from me (Vegas!!!), cemented his place among the boxing greats and set the stage for an eventual clash with the recently un-retired Floyd Mayweather Jr.  Pacquiao came ready to fight last night and each blow he struck seemed to crumble Hatton’s resolve ’til there wasn’t anything left.  The two first round knockdowns were shocking; the surprise on Hatton’s face made it clear that Manny’s power and speed were indefensible.  The final brutal knockdown, coming in the last few seconds of the second round, had the worst intentions written all over it and as Hatton laid flat on top of the Rockstar Energy Drink logo in the center of the ring, it  was clear that Hatton’s career, while tough and brilliant, was over.  Hatton couldn’t even bring himself to do the afterfight interview with Larry Merchant that is customary after fights on HBO pay per view fights; he was clearly still dazed from the fight and stung in the way things turned out.  Next up for the Pac-Man?  Probably a ringside seat at the Mayweather-Marquez fight in July and a date in early 2010 with the winner…..all I know is, after last night, Floyd cannot stand in front of the Pac-Man and hope to succeed, or else he might become the next victim of a career ending beatdown…..just ask Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton.
