Trekkies everywhere, relax!!!!!  J.J. Abrams did not wreck your beloved franchise…….all he did was jumpstart it.  Star Trek, the latest offering from the 60’s sci-fi entity that just will not die, has been retooled for today’s audiences without a significant departure from it’s iconic origins.  Every character from the original show is all here, from the enigmatic James T. Kirk to the engineering sophisticates Checkov and Sulu and everyone in between.  With this being a prequel, we are offered glimpses into the crew’s beginnings, including the selfless act by Kirk’s father that allowed his birth and the challenges faced by Spock on Vulcan due to his mother being human.  The action is pretty much non-stop, with a couple of  well-placed and well thought out plot twists and turns and even a cameo from a familiar face.  The only out of place element was Eric Bana’s Nero, the Romulan villain that opposes the erstwhile crew’s first mission.  Bana seemed to be forcing it, trying hard to ramp up emotions and scowls that didn’t seem to be there.  But, that’s a small flaw in an otherwise brilliant gem of a movie; in every other way, this film sparkled and did justice to all that came before it.  These new actors managed to capture the mannerisms and traits of their characters that Trekkies have come to know without being cheap imitations……everyone here is who you’ve come to know them to be, right down to the green chicks that Kirk macked in the original.  I, for one, am certainly looking forward to what may come from this crew next… about you?

P.S.  Who knew how much of a mack young Spock was?  Damn…..learn something err day.

P.P.S.  Three and a half stars out of five……the summer movie season is 2 for 2.
