Black on Black Crime: Iman vs. Michelle Obama

Just 'cause you're a supermodel does not mean that you know what to say...

I, like so many of us, have always admired Iman’s beauty.  Her look, amidst the endless parade of what seems like supermodel clones, is unique and always struck me as classy and effortlessly elegant.  She has made an indelible mark on the fashion industry in this country and her marriage to David Bowie stands as an example of how two celebrities can make a life together, far from the white hot glare of the paparazzi.  Having said all of this, it pained me to see her take shots at Michelle Obama in an interview in this month’s Parade magazine, where she was quoted as saying that the First Lady was “no great beauty” and her look would just get better with time, while the “great beauty” and her looks would do nothing but go downhill.  As any reader of this blog will attest, I have staunchly defended the First Lady in the past, particularly against nitwits like Oscar de la Renta (you’ve gotta read “An Open Letter to Oscar de la Renta”……one of my favorite posts) and in comparison, Iman’s comments aren’t nearly as harsh or ill spirited.  But, in the grand scheme, when members of the sinking ship that is the GOP cling to the notion that taking as many meaningless shots at the President and his family is their only hope, Iman had only created another opportunity for those wounded elephants to make more noise and create smoke without fire.  For all I know, she might have meant well, but just the hint of hate is enough for the right wing to start clucking.  Michelle Obama has bigger fish to fry and this is probably water on a duck’s back to her; still, I can’t help but feel like I’ve just witnessed another instance of black on black crime.   I just wish folks would start thinking before talking.

  1. I find it interesting that this was the first thing that came out of her mouth, according to the Parade interviewer.

I never thought the girl was a great beauty, but I bought her make-up products just to support a sister. However, did she have to go there and dog Michelle Obama? It was the equivalent of a drive-by…

I have a piece on that over at http://thisblksistaspage@wordpress.com.

  2. Unbelieveable…..I got a sneaky suspicion that within all of her natural look and effortless style, Iman’s breath is overwhelmingly kickin…..But, that’s just my opinion….lol

  3. When in the last time we heard from IMAN???
She’s just trying to get attention.
    Fall Back IMAN! Fall Back!!!

and as my grandmother would say!

“If you cannot say something Nice, the don’t say anything at All!”

  4. Michelle Obama out shines Iman with her education alone… The hell with looks. Make-up can make anyone look like a million bucks!!

    • Thanks for your comment, I couldn’t agree more, being a supermodel obviously has very little to do with class and tact, Iman needs a touch-up on etiquette and poise.
