The Four Horseman Ride Again

He's back.......and here come the Phillies.......

Okay, so let me get this straight……the Philadelphia Phillies, fresh off of one of the better runs in team history, two years removed from the ‘chip, just pulled off one of the greatest deals in recent memory.  Yup, that’s right……the Phils managed to land the biggest prize in free agency, bringing the great Cliff Lee back into the fold and, in doing so, put together the best starting pitching staff in all of baseball.  Lee, who has bounced around the league like a jack ball over the past two seasons, chose to return to Philly after helping the Texas Rangers get to the World Series last season.  Despite larger offers from the Rangers and the Yankees (sigh), Lee made the determination that his place was in Philly, a place that he truly never wanted to leave in the first place.  This move has taken me through a whole gamut of emotions; as a Philly native, I am overjoyed at the buzz and roar that can be seen and heard emanating from the city…..as a baseball fan, I am intrigued at the possibility of what this staff can accomplish; after all, when you talk about Cliff Lee, Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels being on the same staff, you are talking about a force to be reckoned with.  Imaging coming into town and knowing that you will get at least three of those cats in a four game series…..damn!  And, as a Yankees fan, I am reminded of how old my squad is and how many gaping holes there are in the Stripes’ lineup…..I’m also pissed off that our GM made the best offer first and when Lee didn’t jump, took to the papers to bitch about it like a whinny little school girl…..that shit was tired.  In short, the Phillies have given themselves the best chance of any team competing to win championships, provided that everyone stays healthy and the bats can supply some run support. There hasn’t been a starting staff this deep since the Braves squad put together Smoltz, Glavine, Maddox, and…..well….whoever else they had.  This makes the coming season a must see, and to think of it any other way is simply foolish.  Once again, I must congratulate the Phillies and their masterful GM, Rueben Amaro, for putting this together and sending a statement to their competition that they are coming for the SF Giants collective necks this year.  No, I am not giving up on my squad…..but I just am not convinced they can stand up to what the Phils are bringing this year…..in fact, I’m not sure anybody can.  Not even Bud Selig’s meddlesome ass can mess this one up…….
